Frequently Asked Questions in San Diego

Although it’s simple to take your heating and cooling systems for granted, they are essential to the comfort of your house. Though most people are incredibly grateful that their homes and offices have comfortable temperatures, they don’t understand how HVAC systems achieve it. Instead, they believe that air conditioners operate like magic. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that air conditioners are found in 75% of American homes and account for 6% of the country’s total energy production.

Every year, homeowners spend over $29 billion on energy expenses to regulate the temperature inside their houses.

The principles of refrigeration are used in the operation of air conditioners. They transfer heat from one part of the house to the outside, and a fan circulates the resulting cold air via the house’s ducts. Despite being exposed to the outdoors, these units are quite robust, operating for multiple hours every day and frequently lasting 15 years or longer.

When homeowners’ air conditioners break down, they get interested in the operation of these appliances. If any of the systems in your house need to be installed or serviced, you undoubtedly worry about doing the work correctly. The following are some of the most typical inquiries concerning heating and cooling systems:

HVAC FAQs

Should I Get A Heat Pump Or A Furnace In San Diego?
San Diego’s warm temperature is ideal for heat pumps. A heat pump will use less electricity than a furnace as long as the outside temperature is above freezing. For San Diego homeowners without natural gas lines, this is a huge benefit. Furnaces can also be used. Installation of a furnace could be more cost-effective if your air conditioner is already operating. Warm air is released into your home more quickly than a heat pump could. Blu Heating & Air can assist you in selecting the best new HVAC system if the time has come for one. Regardless of your choice, we can service almost any brand and model of heat pump or furnace!
Every one to three months, low- to mid-efficiency air filters should be inspected and replaced if they seem clogged. High-efficiency filters might last longer. Some filters are washable and can be rinsed and reused.
You should service your air conditioner in spring and furnace in fall to get the most out of your equipment. If you have a heat pump, schedule a tune-up twice a year.
Installing attic fans or air filtration and purification systems can help enhance indoor air quality. Additionally, duct sealing and cleaning can help lower air pollution.
For most people, once a month is a good rule of thumb—more or less depending on dust, pet dander, and other impurities. Check often; if it’s dirty, replace it.
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Walls, insulation, attic space, and more affect sizing. An oversized system may create humidity issues; an undersized system runs constantly and raises energy costs. A licensed HVAC specialist should size your system.

Yes, in most cases. Outdoor AC/heat pump units are designed to work with matching indoor units; mixing can reduce performance and efficiency. If both units were purchased together, the indoor unit is likely near end of life as well. Replacing both together also provides a system warranty that covers the whole setup.

Covering can keep debris off the unit, but trying to use the system while covered can cause problems. If you’ll be away and the unit is off, you can cover it—just turn off power before you leave.

Several issues can cause freezing and should be addressed by a qualified technician. Ironically, low refrigerant from leaks can lead to freezing due to pressure changes and over-expansion, which chills the evaporator coil and freezes moisture on it. Dirty evaporator coils reduce airflow and can freeze the system, and faulty blower motors can, too.

With protocol restrictions phasing out R-22 refrigerant/equipment, parts and refrigerant for older systems are becoming more expensive and harder to find. Replacing now can help you avoid future hassles.
Regular maintenance keeps systems performing well. We recommend an annual inspection/service by your HVAC provider. Technicians should inspect, lubricate, and replace worn parts as needed.
Popping often indicates ducts that are too small for the airflow your system produces. Qualified AC repair experts can assess ductwork and make adjustments.

Zoning divides ductwork into sections so you can control temperatures in each zone for targeted, efficient cooling. For example, send less air to an empty guest room and more to a sun-exposed room—improving comfort and efficiency.

As above, consider zoning, filtration/purification, duct sealing/cleaning, and attic ventilation to improve IAQ.

Check the manufacture date on the outdoor unit’s label. If it’s less than five years old, it may still be under warranty—contact the manufacturer for details.

Minimize run time with smart thermostat settings, change filters regularly, and schedule routine inspections to catch issues early.
